Suomussalmi osa 4 Hiljainen kansa - the Silent People

Hiljainen kansa on Reijo Kelan idean perusteella tehty taideteos, joka sijaitsee vitostien varressa n. 30 km Suomussalmelta Kuusamoon päin. Pellolle on laitettu tuhatkunta ihmisenkaltaista hahmoa, joilla on turpeesta tehty pää.

Silent people is a piece of art inspired by Reijo Kela that has thousand human figures with peat-heads. They appeared for the first time 1988 in his dance performance  Ilmari´s Ploughed Field. Later, they have been in Helsinki Senat Square 1994 and they won a prize in Kent  Medway-festival 2008. People donate the clothes and the heads come from the field and you can freely give your shirt and change it to one on a peat-head.
They are situated 30 km to the north from Suomussalmi and there is a café on the very place where you can get crepes, ice cream and coffee and smell the campfire.

"People often ask what precisely is the idea behind the Silent People. A state of psycho-logical withdrawal? The mute Kainuu soul? A forgotten people? Reijo Kela refuses to provide any answer. Each viewer is free to come to his own conclusions. It may, however, be of interest to learn that if the Silent People were to be completely undressed there would remain some one thousand wooden crosses standing in the field. "
